Let’s go back to 1992 for another sketch turned into a movie by Saturday Night Live alumnae.
If SNL had a formula it was simple. When a set of characters from a sketch on the show gains national stardom, turn them into a movie. While that idea bombed more times than it turned out successful films, it still stands out as
It started with the Blues Brothers in 1980 and the successful SNL movies were far and few since then however, this was one of them.
The movie starred SNL alums Mike Myers [in his feature film debut] as Wayne Campbell and Dana Carvey as Garth Algar, a pair of rock fans who broadcast a public-access television show from Wayne’s parent’s basement in Aurora IL. The movie also featured Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere, Lara Flynn-Boyle, Brian Doyle-Murray, Frank DiLeo, Donna Dixon, Chris Farley, Ed O’Neill, Ione Skye, Meat Loaf, and Alice Cooper.
Wayne’s World was released in the US on February 14, 1992 and wound up the eighth biggest film at the box office that year and leads all SNL movies ever made. A sequel, Wayne’s World 2, was released on December 10, 1993.
Wayne’s World was budgeted for 20 million dollars and did almost 185 million dollars that year at the box office.
