The End from 1978 starring Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise
The End is one of those lost classics from the ’70s.
Let’s go back to 1978 for a movie that paired Burt Reynolds and Sally Field and Dom DeLuise, all three had an amazing chemistry together on screen.
Early on, this was Dom and Burt’s first real pairing up, like Wilder and Pryor, they’d go on to make hilarious movies that’d gross hundreds of millions of dollars.
The movie is a dark premise wrapped in a comedy. “Sonny” (Burt Reynolds’) character is told he has a toxic blood disease by his doctor and is going to die a slow painful death. Rather than go through that he decides he’s going to kill himself and fails. He wakes up in a sanitarium where he meets a person he thinks is a doctor (Dom DeLuise) sitting at his bedside, but really isn’t. The real insanity begins there. One of the funniest and truest scenes you’ll ever see in a movie comes at the end of the movie. Who hasn’t said, “Oh, God, I’ll never do this or that or again if you get me out of this.”
While the critics panned the movie, fans didn’t, nor should they ever care about what some frustrated clown has to say about a movie. The movie was a box office success costing three million to make and doing almost 45 million at the box office.
