Rick Astley – Retrospective
Rick Astley has sold over 40 million records worldwide since his deep, husky soulful voice came pumping through the speakers of FM radio back in the latter 80’s. With his voice and the brilliant pop production hit factory team of Stock, Aitken & Waterman. All the stars lined up at the right time.
The U.S. Dance Music Hall of Fame production trio dominated the music charts world wide in the 80’s into the early 90’s. Rick Astley was their biggest artist to hit the charts. They had produced huge hits for Bananarama, Mel & Kim, E.G. Daily, Kylie Minogue, Sonia, Hazel Dean and others but it was Rick Astley who was their goose that laid the golden egg.
The first time I became aware of Rick Astley’s voice was the first single released before he was known as Rick Astley. It was very early in ’87 and RCA had released a song entitled “When You Gonna ” produced by S.A.W. as well.
The “Lisa” was Lisa Carter and the “Rick” was, at that time, an unknown Rick Astley. The song peaked at #11 in Oct. Of 1987, a time when Astley’s first domestic release “Never Gonna Give You Up” was on fire here in the U.S. and around the world. Check it out below.
Astley was discovered by Pete Waterman in 1985 while doing club gigs. While known for his voice, he also plays drums, piano/keyboards, guitar and saxophone. The song that launched him into the stratosphere was “Never Gonna Give You Up” won the British Phonographic Industry Award for British Single in 1988.
He’s been featured on TV shows including It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and more.
With a brand new album out as we prepared this post, he’s still on tour and selling out everywhere he goes.
Check out a ton of his great music below along with interviews and more.
