Sweet Freedom – Michael McDonald
Used in the 1986 film “Running Scared” which grossed over 38,000,000.00 at the box office, it starred Billy Crystal and the late, great Gregory Hines as two cops here in Chicago. It also starred very young versions of Jimmy Smits, Joe Pantoliano and others. The movie was filmed right here in Chicago. Sweet Freedom reached #7 on the U.S. pop charts. The amazing soundtrack also featured music from Klymaxx, New Edition and Patti LaBelle, just to name a few.
If you listen carefully you’ll hear Gregory Hines and Siedah Garrett handling background vocals. You can get the song for your own collection here.
Written by the UK’s late Rod Temperton of Heatwave (Always and Forever, Boogie Nights, Groove Line, Thriller etc), Michael McDonald’s voice is a shiny beacon of light calling you back to the mid 80’s.
Michael McDonald’s voice… unmistakable, his career, long and iconic. From his days as a background singer to taking over lead in the Doobie Brothers and guiding them from the mid 70’s to mid 80’s, McDonald is still going strong.
In fact, the Doobie Brothers are celebrating 50 years with full reunion tour
Michael McDonald, as an artist and songwriter, has been awarded an impressive five Grammys®. However, by maintaining a low-key profile, the contrast of Michael McDonald as a person and as a musician is astounding. Though comfortable onstage, he has never been a flashy entertainer, nor has he been distracted by passing trends. Instead, McDonald has triumphed through music alone, with a remarkable voice and a body of well-crafted songs. Few have made such an impact with so much substance and so little hoopla.
In 2002, Danish electronic percussion duo Safri Duo covered the song featuring Michael McDonald.
