Adam Sandler was at the top of his game in the ’90s. After being fired from SNL in 1995, Sandler proved he didn’t need Lorne Michaels to bow before. In fact, Sandler’s career skyrocketed after leaving the poorly produced show.
The Happy Gilmore character is loosely based on Sandler’s childhood friend Kyle McDonough, who played ice hockey and would golf with Sandler as they grew up.
Chubbs Peterson’s missing hand is an inside joke regarding Carl Weathers’ film Predator (1987) where his character lost his arm.
In a 1994 interview, Sandler said that inspiration for the movie also came from the male-bonding classic, 1980’s Caddyshack.
Filmed in British Columbia, the exterior golf scenes were filmed at Pitt Meadows at the Swan-e-set Bay Resort & Country Club
The movie starred Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Carl Weathers, SCTV alums Kevin Nealon and Joe Flaherty, special guest appearances from Richard Kiel, Bob Barker, pro golfers Mark Lye, Lee Trevino, announcer Verne Lundquist along with Ben Stiller who was uncredited.
The movie was budgeted for 12 million dollars and did over 41 million dollars at the box office.
