George Clinton Readies For Final Takeoff With Parliament/Funkaldelic

George Clinton and the P-Funk nation, standing together and strong for over 50 years now.

When I was a kid, I had a chance to check out The Mothership Connection tour at Soldier Field here in Chicago.  I was a fan from Maggot Brain and have been since.

When I had found out George Clinton, Parliament/Funkadelic were bringing the *Mothership Connection tour here? I was there five hours early with my one little ticket and can honestly say it was one of the top 5 concerts I’ve ever been to, definitely #1 for the strange but an truly fun time.  From the music to the people, we all were truly ‘one nation under a groove’ that day.  It was like a KISS concert but funkier, weirder and definitely unlike anything else at that time.

I was always amazed at how experimental they sounded. It was like guys just jammin’ in the studio and coming up with really different, out-there stuff that entertained the hell out of me. There wasn’t a song by them I wouldn’t drop in a set back in the ‘disco days’ at any club I was working.

A few months ago we did a feature on the amazing, long history of George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic on one of our Hump Day Classic Concerts, if you missed it, CLICK HERE to check it out or just scroll to the bottom for some great music videos, interviews and documentaries on Clinton and all the different versions of the group.

george clintonNow, well into his sixth decade of life in the business and on the road, creator and funkateer extraordinaire George Clinton, like Captain Kirk in Star Trek is now ready to land the ship and let the new crew take it forward.

It’s been a long trip and the final episode will end with the One Nation Under a Groove Tour (named after the massive hit and album from ’78) kicking off this spring in Hawaii and going through August across the U.S.

Clinton told Rolling Stone that he’d love to keep on doin this but he’s going to be 78 in a few months and it’s time for the band to keep it going.  Like KISS and other bands, Clinton was smart enough to have enough great players in the brand to move it into the future and long after he’s gone.

The tour, which officially kicks off after Memorial Day weekend (though Clinton is playing some farewell tour dates beforehand), will feature a variety of different opening artists through its run including Galactic, Dumpstaphunk, Fishbone, Miss Velvet and the Blue Wolf.

Tickets for most shows go on sale Friday at 10 AM local time. Pre-sales will start on February 7th; more information is available at Clinton’s website.

The Parliament-Funkadelic band features several musicians who have been in the lineup for the last decade, as well as a handful — trumpeter Bennie Cowan, saxophonist Greg Thomas, bassist Lige Curry and guitarist Blackbird McKnight — who have been with the group for 30 years or longer. It also features many of Clinton’s descendants.

At a special ceremony, Clinton will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Grammy Awards.
