For Tonight – Nancy Martinez

It’s what we’re all about, throwbacks and old school mixes. This is just one of the many great songs you’d hear on The Beat Chicago you won’t hear on other stations in Chicago.

For Tonight by Nancy Martinez was released in 1986,

Before this hit, Nancy was known as JADE who, in 1982, had a Hi-NRG hit with “I’m Gonna Get Your Love.”  Later that year, she’d strike again on Atlantic Records as NANCY MARTIN with “Can’t Believe”.  (see below)

Like disco icon France Joli (Come To Me 1979), Martinez was a French Canadian. Nancy grew up in Montreal and studied piano as a child. Imagine that, a French Canadian making Freestyle music, truly diverse.

“For Tonight” made it to #2 for two weeks on the Billboard Dance charts while peaking at #32 on Billboard’s pop charts. The follow-up single “Move Out” didn’t fare as well.

NANCY MARTINEZ TIMELINE

1987 saw the release of the single “Can’t Wait”. This song is not on any Nancy Martinez album, but the single peaked at #11 on the dance charts, and is on the compilation CD “Greatest Freestyle Album in The Universe, vol. 3”

In 1987 Nancy Martinez released her CD “Unpredictable”. Singles from this CD didn’t make the impact that prior ones did, but “Save Your Love For Me” was played on dance radio, as was follow up song “You’ve Got Me On Fire”.

She was nominated as Most Promising Female Vocalist at the 1987 Juno Awards.

In 1990 she released her first French Album “Nancy Martinez” on Isba/CBS Label and had 3 top ten singles from the album.

In 1993 Nancy released a French album on Isba Music/ CBS Records entitled Pourquoi Tu Pars? featuring the title track, a cover of Italian singer songwriter Marco Masini’s “Perche lo fai?” As well as “La Maitresse de tes reves” whose video received much airplay on Musique Plus (Much Music’s sister station in Quebec). In 2006, Martinez collaborated with MC Mario and Ivan Pavlin on the song “Not Guilty”.

In 2005 Martinez recorded “Downtown” a collection of Jazz Standards.

Martinez also was featured on Kmaro’s “Femme Like You” and “Crazy”.

In 2010, “For Tonight” was remixed by MC Mario & Vito V from Les Boyz Electro and appeared on his album Mixdown 2010, peaking #2 on his show and #9 in Canada.

This is in regards to the actual video featuring the performer singing ‘Can’t Believe’ in the video you see above

Been so many years but I remember when Wendy Radow was hired to play Nancy Martin. Yes that is Wendy as Nancy Martin. Wendy and I were in a disco band is the late 70s in Montreal. We dated briefly and remained friends. She used to tell me various stories about the Nancy Martin thing. From what I understand, the single came out and Nancy for some reason didn’t want to do it so they found Wendy. She did this gig for a while. Wendy has an incredible voice. Much prefered this song live when she was actually singing it. This may clear up some confusion if someone had met the real Nancy and then Wendy. Hope this helps. Kelly.
