This version of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is based on the 15th-century Arthurian romance Le Morte d’Arthur by Thomas Malory.

Nigel Terry plays King Arthur, Nicol Williamson is Merlin, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, future star Helen Mirren as Morgana, future star Liam Neeson as Gawain, future star Gabriel Byrne as Uther Pendragon, Corin Redgrave as Cornwall, and future star Patrick Stewart as Leondegrance.

The film is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur that features prominently in Arthurian literature.

The movie was filmed entirely on location in Ireland, employing Irish actors and crew.

The movie was budgeted at about 11 million dollars and brought in over 35 million dollars at the box office.
