The Dream Merchants
In keeping with our motto, all the best movies, TV shows have been made, we’re simply here to help you remember them all. 1980’s “The Dream Merchants” is another shining example of that.
Back in the day, WGN, here in Chicago, along with other TV stations had a great mini-series based on Harold Robbins’ 1949 novel, “The Dream Merchants.”
Set in the early 1900s, the movie takes us through all the twists and turns of the early movie industry. Complete with shysters, over-inflated egos and wannabe stars. Somewhere in the middle of that, there’s a love story too… so you got that goin’ for ya, which is nice.
Harold Robbins wrote the book based on Universal’s founder Carl Laemmle, played by a very young and ambitious Mark Harmon.
Starring an array of big-name actors from the era including Vincent Gardenia, Morgan Fairchild, Eve Arden, Jose Ferrer, Robert Culp, Red Buttons and others, it’s truly a lost gem.
Back to 1980 we go for Harold Robbins’ “The Dream Merchants.”
