Do You Wanna Funk – Sylvester (1982)
Do You Wanna Funk is just one of the many great songs you’d hear on The Beat Chicago.
There’s enough stations playing rock n’ roll classics and the same 80’s songs from Bon Jovi, Journey, John Cougar, Elton John all day long and that’s all cool but, when you want something completely different? When you want everything from Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Spinners to Stevie B, C+C Music Factory and more of the music that keeps you movin? We’re it.
See, we’re all about the classics too… Classic R&B and dance of the ’60s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, freestyle and more. For us, it’s not about how old a song is, it’s about how good it is and this is as good as it gets.
If you saw 1982’s “Trading Places” with Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Denholm Elliott, Don Ameche, Ralph Bellamy, Bob and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) and a very young Jim Belushi then you remember this playing at Billy Ray Valentine’s ‘house party’.
For the rest of you, you remember this blasting out the speakers at clubs around the country back in the day.
Produced by the late Patrick Cowley (he’d pass away that year), Cowley, like Moroder was way ahead of his time using electronics to produce music and they’re both honorary inductees into the U.S. Dance Music Hall of Fame.
So here we are post-disco, the song never makes a dent on the radio but it’s used in the mixes on WBMX and other radio stations that weren’t scared of dance music or run by neanderthals who only played rock n’ roll. Go figure.
Sylvester’s other hits you’d hear on The Beat include “You Make Me Feel, Mighty Real”, “Don’t Stop”, Dance (Disco Heat) and others. Sylvester passed away in 1988.
