Dance Or Die – Sweet Pea Atkinson (1982)

Dance Or Die by Sweet Pea Atkinson is just one of the many great songs you’d hear on The Beat Chicago.

There’s enough stations playing rock n’ roll classics and the same 80’s songs from Bon Jovi, Journey, John Cougar, Elton John all day long and that’s all cool but, when you want something completely different?  When you want everything from Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Spinners to Stevie B, C+C Music Factory classic 80’s dance hits and more of the music that keeps you movin?  we’re it.

See, we’re all about the classics too…. Classic R&B and dance of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, freestyle and more.  For us, it’s not about how old a song is, it’s about how good it is and this is as good as it gets.

Back to 1982 we go, the year so much great dance music hit the clubs. This was one of those jams you’d hear in the mixes on Chicago’s legendary WBMX.

Sweet Pea Atkinson was one of the singers for Was (Not Was). Was (Not Was) were a production team consisting of David Weiss and Donald Fagenson, also known as the Was Brothers.  The team produced a number of hits in the 80’s including “Walk The Dinosaur.”

They had a hit a year earlier that was also used in the ‘mixes’ titled “Tell me That I’m Dreaming” and a minor hit after that from that same album “Out Come The Freaks” often used by U.S. Dance Music Hall of Fame DJ Mickey Mixin’ Oliver in his mixes.

Definitely one of those one-hit-wonders but from a singer who’s been on the seen every since then.
