If you grew up here in Chicago in the ’60s, ’70s, or ’80s, “Creature Features” was part of your childhood. The theme song was all we needed to hear, we were ready to be freaked out, too scared to sleep [without the lights on] as we got under our blankets and held on to our pillows for dear life with our Jiffy Pop popcorn.
Creature Features was actually a generic title for a genre of horror TV format shows broadcast on local U.S. television stations throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. While mostly seen in Midwestern cities on the weekends, Sydney Australia and a few other outside the Midwest cities were the benefactors of this show each week including:
WNEW-Channel 5 (New York City)
WKBG-Channel 56 (Boston)
WUTV-Channel 29 (Buffalo)
WKBS-Channel 48 (Philadelphia)
WGN-Channel 9 and WFLD-Channel 32 (Chicago)
KBSI-Channel 23 (Cape Girardeau)
KDNL-Channel 30 (Saint Louis)
KPLR-TV-Channel 11 (Saint Louis)
WTOG-Channel 44 (Tampa/St.Petersburg)
WCIX-Channel 6 (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale)
KTVU-Channel 2 (Oakland)
KOFY TV 20 (San Francisco)
WDCA-Channel 20 (Washington, D.C.)
KMTV-Channel 3 (Omaha)
WQAD-Channel 8 (Quad Cities)
KSHB-Channel 41 (Kansas City)
WSJV-Channel 28 (South Bend, Indiana)
WKBD-Channel 50 (Detroit)
The movies broadcast on these various shows were generally classic and cult horror movies of the 1930s to 1950s, the horror and science-fiction films of the 1950s, British horror films of the 1960s, and the Japanese “giant monster” movies of the 1960s and 1970s along with your run-of-the-mill ‘the aliens are gonna get us.’
An example of what we’d be watching on any given Friday night or Saturday night (depending on the city/station) would be 1956’s “Forbidden Planet” (below)
Creature Features usually aired on Friday or Saturday night, around eight or nine o’clock. In some cities, it aired on Saturday afternoons.
If you ever wondered where the idea for Mystery Science Theater 3000 came from, it was derived from friends watching these movies
