TOP VIDEOS OF THE 1980’s
There’s so many music styles that came into play during the 80’s.
We started off with the end of disco and the beginning of ‘dance music. The “disco dj” entered the studio to produce music.
Rap music became ‘hip-hop’. Rap’s first hit was in 1979 with ‘Rapper’s Delight.” In less than 10 years, rap would explode on the scene unlike anything since the birth of rock n’ roll.
The ‘classic rock’ format would keep 60’s and 70’s rock music alive; The ‘oldies’ format would keep the 50’s and 60’s alive; the ‘beautiful music format would be replaced by ‘new age’ and ‘smooth jazz’; house music would explode on the scene via club DJs and bedroom producers in Chicago; Freestyle music came into play from NYC with Latin electro sounds that would ignite dance floors and mix shows from L.A. to Miami and everywhere in between; Synth-pop and the Brits would hit the charts with massive hits. The one thing all these new styles had in common? The were all complimented by the music video.
MTV would change the way we see and hear music on August 1, 1981. The art of the music video got better as time went by. In fact, the ‘music video’ became a massive production for artists looking to ‘one-up’ each other and impress more and more fans.
A few years ago, Billboard took a poll of its readers to find out what were the top music videos of the 1980’s and the videos above were voted tops of them all.
