Every Thursday we feature a classic movie [or amazing clips from them] from back in the day for you to watch at work, on the way to work, on the way home from work or on your day off to watch and share.

Today’s feature takes you back to 1981 with a cast featuring a who’s who in Hollywood or the entertainment world, one of the greatest collection of stars at the time in Cannonball Run

cannonball run burt domWith its collection of stars and many who’d grow into stardom (like Jackie Chan), Cannonball Run was a buddy movie loaded with lots of buddies and of course, the most underrated comedy team ever, the late Burt Reynolds and lovable Dom DeLuise.

Similar to the 1963 classic “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” where literally everyone in Hollywood had a cameo or small part, in fact, Cannonball Run would feature those from sports and across the entertainment world spectrum.

The cast included Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Farr, Terry Bradshaw, Mel Tillis, Jackie Chan, Michael Hui, Richard Kiel and more.

Directed by Hal Needham who did Smokey & The Bandit and made ‘outtakes’ famous by including them at the end of the movie, Cannonball Run was based on the 1979 running of an actual cross-country outlaw road race beginning in Connecticut and ending in California. Jackie Chan had said that he got the idea to use outtakes in his films from working with Needham on this movie.

One of 1981’s most successful films at the box office grossing over 72 million dollars making it the sixth highest grossing film of 1981 behind Raiders of the Lost Ark, On Golden Pond, Superman II, Arthur, and Stripes, it was followed by Cannonball Run II (1984), and Speed Zone (1989). This and the 1984 sequel were the final film appearances of the beloved Dean Martin.

In 2018, rumors are getting bigger about a reboot to be coming in the near future. Nothing will ever top the original as you’ll be able to see below.
